What is the lesson of 1 Peter 1 1 12? ›

In 1 Peter 1:1-12, we see that we've been chosen to be out of place. That is good news because we're joined to a new family founded by a loving Father and grounded in resurrection life.

Jesus is our living hope. Our future is secure and endless and perfect. As the children of God we have every reason to rejoice, even in this present darkness. Peter then calls us to prepare ourselves to live as the holy people God has made us to be.

We have a hope which is steadfast and certain! It is this glorious hope which Christians have in Jesus Christ which helps us to face the trials of life with courage and faith. Peter reminds his readers of their living hope of an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade- kept in heaven for you.

Verses 12 and 13 tell us that instead of being surprised at trials, we should rejoice in them. We should not think that something strange is happening when we suffer; after all, Jesus does tell us that we must take up our cross if we want to follow Him (Mark 8:34–35).

The main point he makes is that they must live God-honoring lives by enduring such hostility with faith, joy, and purity. In 3:13-22 he says that if they do good as he just instructed, generally speaking people are not going to be out to get them. At least that is usually the case, but not always.

At the beginning of Peter's reign, Russia was territorially a huge power, but with no access to the Black Sea, the Caspian, or the Baltic, and to win such an outlet became the main goal of Peter's foreign policy.

Key Verse. “For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.”

He writes, “But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler.” That is, if you are suffering because of what you did, count it as a result of a fallen world and our fallen nature. If you are suffering because of what Jesus did, count it as joy.

Despite his weaknesses and doubts, Peter was the most important apostle from the beginning, and that is why Jesus designated him to be head of the apostles. He saw his potential for leadership and he acted on it. Additionally, Peter is always the first mentioned when listing the apostles, even the inner three.

Peter reinforces another crucial idea in this verse: In the ancient prophesies, God promised a Savior who would suffer and then be glorified. Jesus' life and death and resurrection fulfilled those prophesies. That same God has now promised that, even though Christians may now suffer, we will also be glorified.

Why does Paul rebuke Peter? ›

Paul recalls an episode in Antioch in which he saw Peter recoiling from eating with Gentiles (i.e., non-Jews). Paul publicly decries Peter's actions, condemning them as hypocritical (v. 13) and “not in step with the truth of the gospel” (v. 14).

Peter told the Christians of Asia Minor that they could greatly rejoice in their salvation, even though they might have many heavy temptations “for a season.” When you are going through the fire of affliction, focus your thoughts on Jesus Christ and you can also “rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.”

Well, in the Scriptures, the description of the holiness of God is directly linked to the idea that he is set apart, he is different. And so Peter is saying that we must be set apart from the world in the same way that God is set apart from the world.

This would mean that the Son agrees in the sending of the Spirit, that the Spirit is His ambassador. In turn, theologians see in this text an allusion to eternal realities. The Father and the Son send the Spirit because from all eternity, the Spirit has proceeded from the Father and the Son.

Sober-mindedness, according to Peter, means living with a single-minded focus. What is that focus? “Being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” It means this; sober-mindedness is living with eternity in view.

These words summarize Peter's letter, and include both a warning against being misled by the false teachers and an encouragement to keep growing in Christ. Specifically, Peter urges his readers to grow in two areas: The grace of Jesus, and their knowledge of Him.
