Chainsaw Man Movie: Expanding the Manga & Anime Universe! | NYCC 2023 (2025)

Get ready for a thrilling cinematic experience with Chainsaw Man: The Movie - Reze Arc! This highly anticipated film adaptation has the team behind it buzzing with excitement, and they're ready to share some exclusive insights.

At New York Comic Con, assistant director Masato Nakazono, along with MAPPA president and supervising producer Manabu Otsuka, and CGI producer Yusuke Tannawa, revealed their vision for bringing one of Chainsaw Man's most popular arcs to life on the big screen.

Nakazono emphasized the importance of capturing the essence of the original manga and TV series while creating a unique theatrical experience. "We wanted to inherit the strengths of the anime series, but with a vibrant twist," he explained. "Makima's hair color, for instance, was enhanced to make it pop on the silver screen."

But here's where it gets controversial... Adapting manga to film often involves expanding the dialogue, and Nakazono shared how they approached this challenge. "Creating dialogue between panels was crucial to ensuring the characters' intimacy shone through. We wanted the audience to feel the same adoration for Reze as Denji does."

Tannawa, the CGI producer, elaborated on the film's unique animation style, a blend of 2D and 3D. "Our goal was to make these two styles coexist naturally, creating a seamless visual experience."

And this is the part most people miss... The scale of a TV series and a film differs significantly, and the team had to ensure the background elements fit perfectly within the theatrical frame.

Otsuka shed light on the unusual distribution approach, partnering with Sony for international release. "We wanted to tell the next story arc on the big screen, and with the success of the first season, we felt Chainsaw Man deserved its own independent film. Sony's distribution network was the perfect fit."

During the panel, fans were treated to exclusive clips and animatics, and the team shared messages from the director and character designer. Kazutaka wrote, "We aimed to capture the fun and appeal of Chainsaw Man, and the action scenes are designed to be an amusement park ride for your eyes!"

Director Yoshihara's message teased a new genre: "Reze Arc is a film that blends love, violence, action, and romance seamlessly. The impact will vary depending on which character's perspective you follow."

Chainsaw Man: The Movie - Reze Arc hits theaters on October 24th, and the team promises an energetic and thrilling ride. Will you be there to witness it?

What are your thoughts on adapting manga to film? Do you think the team has done justice to the source material? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments!
