Chiefs vs. 49ers rematch: Everything to know about Super Bowl LVIII matchup (2024)

A Super Bowl rematch has officially been set.

For the second time in five seasons, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will face off on Super Bowl Sunday. The Chiefs defense shut down MVP favorite Lamar Jackson while the Patrick Mahomes-Travis Kelce connection was on-point in a 17-10 win over the top-seeded Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday. And a few hours later, the San Francisco 49ers rallied from a 17-point halftime deficit to defeat the Detroit Lions, 34-31, in the NFC Championship Game and claim the second Super Bowl spot.

Andy Reid's Chiefs defeated Kyle Shanahan's 49ers, 31-20, in Super Bowl LIV for the first ring of the Mahomes era. Now Kansas City is seeking championship No. 3 under this regime, while the 49ers are hoping that snapping their two-game NFC title game losing streak will set them up for some Super Bowl payback.

Now that the Super Bowl matchup is official, here's what you need to know about the big game.

When, Where Is the 2024 Super Bowl?

Super Bowl LVIII (that's 58 to those who struggle with Roman numerals) will be played on Sunday, February 11 in Las Vegas. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET inside the Las Vegas Raiders' Allegiant Stadium, and the game will air on CBS with Jim Nantz (play-by-play) and Tony Romo (analyst) on the call. The 49ers-Chiefs matchup will also be available to stream on Paramount+ and NFL+. And for the first time, the biggest football game of the year will also air on Nickelodeon.

The Chiefs will serve as the home team for the game, so expect Kansas City to be in red uniforms and the 49ers to be in white jerseys.

Super Bowl Betting Favorite: Chiefs or 49ers?

The 49ers opened as a 2.5-point Super Bowl favorite over the Chiefs at DraftKings Sportsbook on Sunday night, but that line quickly fell to an even 1.0 in favor of the Niners. San Francisco (12-5 regular season, NFC's No. 1 seed) has been the betting favorite to hoist the Lombardi Trophy throughout the postseason, and that hasn't changed, at least so far, with one game to go against the Chiefs (11-6 regular season, AFC's No. 3 seed).

How Many Super Bowls Have the Chiefs, 49ers Won?

The two franchises participating in this year's big game now have 14 Super Bowl appearances between the two of them. This will be the sixth time playing on Super Bowl Sunday for the Chiefs, and the eighth for the 49ers—tied with three other organizations for the second-most in NFL history.

San Francisco is 5-2 all-time in the Super Bowl, including wins in the franchise's first five appearances in the game, though the Niners haven't won it all since the 1994 season. San Fran lost to the Ravens in the "Harbaugh Brothers Bowl" in Super Bowl XLVII, and most recently blew a double-digit second half lead to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV.

Kansas City enters its latest Super Bowl trip 3-2 all-time in the game. The Chiefs lost the first Super Bowl to the Green Bay Packers, then won rings in the fourth edition of the game. But after winning that 1970 contest, the Chiefs weren't back in the Super Bowl until they beat the 49ers in 2020 in Miami. Mahomes and company returned to the big stage a year later, losing to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then again last year when they beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the "Kelce Bowl."

The Chiefs are one of just three franchises in NFL history to make four Super Bowl appearances in a five-year span, and can become the first organization since the New England Patriots during the 2003-04 seasons to hoist the Lombardi in consecutive years.

Mahomes Joining Rare Super Bowl Company

In a couple weeks, Mahomes will become just the eighth QB in league history to start at least four Super Bowls. And that's just the beginning. The two-time MVP, 28, is in line to become the first quarterback ever to start four Super Bowls before turning 30, while Tom Brady (10) and John Elway (five) are the only signal-callers with more all-time starting appearances in the big game.

All hail @PatrickMahomes

1st QB ever to start 4 Super Bowls before turning 30

3rd QB to start 4 Super Bowls in a 5-season span, joining @TomBrady & @JimKelly1212

14 playoff wins, behind only Brady & @JoeMontana

4th Super Bowl start, only Brady & @JohnElway have more

How Much Do Super Bowl LVIII Tickets Cost?

Seeing the Chiefs and 49ers face off for the Lombardi Trophy in-person isn't going to be cheap. The least-expensive seats inside Allegiant Stadium are still north of $7,900, excluding fees, on SeatGeek as of Sunday night. Some ticket prices are as high as $67,319, and as Newsweek reported on last week, flight and hotel prices will also provide significant costs.

Who Is Performing the Super Bowl Halftime Show?

This year's Super Bowl halftime act will have some fans saying, "Yeah!"

Usher is headlining the game's signature halftime show, as previously announced by the league. But there will be more than one musical star on the biggest stage of the sports year. The pregame entertainment lineup features a variety of award-winning performers. Reba McEntire will sing the national anthem, Post Malone will present "America the Beautiful" and Andra Day will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."

Both the pregame and halftime musical performances will also feature American Sign Language (ASL) performances on behalf of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD). Daniel Durant will perform the national anthem in ASL, Anjel Piñero will sign "America the Beautiful" and Shaheem Sanchez will sign for "Lift Every Voice and Sing." Sanchez will also perform the ASL rendition of the halftime show, the league said.

Will Taylor Swift Be at the Super Bowl?

Karma is the guy on the Chiefs, and that guy—Kelce—is going to the Super Bowl (again). But will this be Chiefs vs. 49ers (Taylor's version)?

The international pop star's presence at Chiefs games has been well-documented this season, which already has fans wondering if Swift will be in Vegas on Super Bowl Sunday. But there isn't a lot of "Blank Space" on her February calendar. Swift will perform an Eras Tour show in Tokyo on the Saturday night before the Super Bowl. The 12-time Grammy Award-winner has yet to confirm whether she will be in attendance afterward, though ESPN's Adam Schefter gave the "Swifties" some hope by reposting a schedule breakdown.
