The study analyzed nearly 32,000 reports of human-wildlife interactions made to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife between 2017 and 2023. It found that clashes between humans and wildlife, particularly carnivores, rose after prolonged periods of reduced precipitation. The most affected species were mountain lions, coyotes, and bobcats.
The researchers developed a statistical method to analyze the correlation between changes in precipitation and reported conflicts. They discovered that during droughts, animals struggle to find water and food, leading them to expand their territories or switch to alternative food sources, including livestock. This shift in animal behavior can be perceived as a threat by humans, resulting in increased conflict reports.
