Mom’s Poppy Seed Bread Recipe with Almond Glaze

Does your family have a recipe that brings back sweet memories from the holidays? For us, it’s our Mom’s Almond Poppy Seed Bread. She would make it around Christmas. She would wrap it up pretty in plastic wrap and ribbon, and our dad would deliver it to his landlords along with a plate of Christmas cookies. The best part is that this glazed poppyseed bread can be made ahead and put in the freezer.

Our mom went overboard every Christmas season whipping up goodies for landlords, friends and neighbors. The goodies included Dainty Log Cookies, Grandma’s Fantasy Fudge, Chocolate Nut Cookies, Cinnamon Glazed Pecans, and Caramel Corn.

Both Barbara and I could eat an entire loaf of almond poppy seed bread in one sitting if we let ourselves. Mostly because the poppy seed bread glaze is the icing on the cake…or bread in this case. It’s a combination of almond, butter and vanilla flavors which is a match made in heaven.

While we suggest enjoying this quick bread anytime of the year, it could very well become your family’s favorite holiday breakfast or the perfect gift.

Our favorite part of Mom’s Poppy Seed Bread is that you throw all the ingredients together in one bowl and mix! We also love our Mom’s Perfect Chocolate Chip Zucchini Bread!

Do you have to soak poppy seeds before baking?

While some websites recommend soaking poppy seeds before baking, I do not follow this practice. Add them to your batter dry, straight from the container.

Where to buy poppy seeds for baking?

Poppy seeds can be found in most larger grocery stores or supermarkets in the baking aisle or herbs/spices aisle. Try stocking up at a Bulk Grocery Store or Amish Grocery Store too. These are very economical places to find poppy seeds in larger quantities.

How to Store Poppy Seeds?

Store poppy seeds in an air-tight container in the cabinet. Be sure the cabinet is a dry, cool place. The shelf life of poppy seeds are approximately 1 year before they start to lose flavor.
