Why are Dollar Tree items so cheap? ›

One key approach is bulk buying from suppliers. By purchasing millions of units to distribute across their numerous locations, they can acquire products at a lower cost, similar to the savings Costco offers its customers through bulk purchases. Another method dollar stores use is sourcing liquidated items.

Jumping ahead to June 2021, Dollar Tree announced an increase in its base price for in-store items, shifting from $1 to $1.25. With this upcoming shift in pricing, as well as the integration of new products, the base price will be increased storewide once again, jumping from $1.25 to $1.50.

Dollar General offers higher quality and a wider variety of products, but prices range from $3 to $10. There are over two times more Dollar General stores than Dollar Tree stores and the shopping experience is typically better.

In 1993, the name Only $1.00 was changed to Dollar Tree Stores to address what could be a multi-price-point strategy in the future, and part equity interest was sold to SKM partners, a private equity firm.

In fact, Walmart cost less than Dollar General in our price comparison. We checked prices on a basket of common goods in their online stores. Walmart was cheaper overall, and beat Dollar General in 10 out of 12 of the items in our basket.

Dollar Tree's CEO did say in March the increase will start in 2024 across all stores. "This year, across 3,000 stores, we expect to expand our multi-price assortment by over 300 items at price points ranging from $1.50 to $7," Dollar Tree CEO Rick Dreiling said in the call on March 13.

Dollar Tree on Wednesday said it plans to close nearly 1,000 stores over the next several years, after disclosing significant losses in its latest earnings report. The discount store chain lost $1.7 billion in the fourth quarter, down sharply from earnings of $452.2 million a year ago.

Although many items available at your local Dollar Tree, like personal care, food and beverage items, will see a new cap price of $7, up from a max price ceiling of $5 set in June 2023, not all items will be affected by this increase. The vast majority of items will remain priced at $1.25.

While Dollar Tree is a great option if you want everything to cost just $1.25, the quality and variety of products may not be as high as what you would find at other stores. Dollar General and Family Dollar both offer a wider range of items and may have more sales and promotions, but their prices can vary.

Dollar Tree, which focuses more on middle-income shoppers in suburbs, bought Family Dollar in 2015 for $8.5 billion. The combined company hoped that by joining forces, it could grow its customer base, reduce costs and fend off bigger retailers like Dollar General, which is mainly in rural areas.

The key reason for its loss is a $594.4 million charge for portfolio review, a $1.07 billion goodwill impairment charge, and a $950 million trade name impairment charge.

Of the 226 consumer and food products tested at Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, Dollar General, 99 Cents Only, and Five Below, 53% of the products screened in 2021 contained one or more chemicals of concern. All of the products tested were purchased in 2021.

Despite the inclusion of items priced above one dollar, Dollar Tree has retained its brand name for continuity and recognition among consumers. The name "Dollar Tree" still conveys the idea of value and affordability, even if not every item in the store is priced at exactly one dollar.

Dollar General sells products from America's most-trusted brands such as Clorox, Energizer, Procter & Gamble, Hanes, Coca-Cola, Mars, Unilever, Nestle, Kimberly-Clark, Kellogg's, General Mills, and PepsiCo. The store's fresh layout is designed to make shopping simple for customers.

In 2021, Dollar Tree caused an uproar when it raised its standard price from $1, as the store name implies, to $1.25. The retail giant then rolled back its prices to $1 in 2023, a move that coincided with cooling inflation.
