I have always wanted to try making edible paint so I was excited to discover that the recipe for edible fingerpaint was included in the brand new bookTime to Create: Hands-On Explorations in Process Art for Young ChildrenbyChristie Burnett of Childhood 101…

Throughout Christie’s brand new book, she shares advice on areas of art that include creating spaces for art in your home, organizing art materials, displaying children’s art, storing artwork, and supporting children’s creativity. Two of my favorite sections that Christie shares later in the book is on setting the stage for creating and asking good questions…

Christie’s book is filled with beautifully illustrated art processes that span all across the creative spectrum. The broad range of processes in this 128 page book of art include: drawing; painting; printmaking; collage; sculpture; textiles; digital photography; and working outdoors with natural materials.

Edible Fingerpaint

Because I have an infant and a toddler running around here much of the time, I went in search of an activity that I could try with my two grandsons. Right away, I found the recipe for edible fingerpaint and decided to give it a try…

The recipe calls for…

• 1/2 cup cornstarch
• 1 1/2 cup of water
• food color

Simply mix the cornstarch and water together in a saucepan. Stir constantly over a low heat until the mixture thickens and allow to cool. Divide the mixture into separate containers and add food color to your smooth and squishy edible fingerpaint.

You will want to make sure your edible fingerpaint is cool before sharing it with your child but once it has cooled, then the fingerpainting can begin…

Although this fingerpaint really is edible, I don’t recommend serving it up to your child by the spoonful or he might decide that eating it looks just as good as painting with it…
