USA Basketball Announces 2024 Olympic Team Player Pool: Who Made It? (2024)

USA Basketball announced the 41-player pool for the 2024 USA Basketball Men’s National Team, giving fans a glimpse of the athletes who could be competing at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

By the time the Summer Games roll around in July, the list will be whittled down to just 12 players who will represent the country in Paris. And while numerous players have expressed their intentions to rep the U.S. abroad, a lot can happen in seven months.

USA Basketball Men’s National Team Managing Director Grant Hill was responsible for selecting the 41 players.

“The United States boasts unbelievable basketball talent and I am thrilled that many of the game’s superstars have expressed interest in representing our country at the 2024 Olympic Summer Games,” Hill said, per USA Basketball. “It is a privilege to select the team that will help us toward the goal of once again standing atop the Olympic podium. This challenging process will unfold over the next several months as we eagerly anticipate the start of national team activity."

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr will lead the team, with the assistance of Gonzaga University's Mark Few, the L.A. Clippers' Tyronne Lue, and Miami Heat's Erik Spoelstra. The coaching group led the 2023 USA Basketball Men’s National Team to fourth place in the 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cup in Manila.

Most notable was the 1992 team's win at the Barcelona Olympics. The squad, for the first time consisting of professional players like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Patrick Ewing, Scottie Pippen, and Karl Malone, was dubbed“The Dream Team."

Before the roster was announced, many NBA stars publicly discussed their interest in joining the 2024 U.S. National Team, including Steph Curry, who has yet to participate in the Summer Games.

At a Warriors preseason press conference in October, Curry said that he's considered the opportunity and would like to play in the 2024 Summer Olympics, having previously declined the opportunity to participate in the 2016 and 2020 Games.

“It’s the one thing I haven’t done and also understand the opportunity for Team USA to kind of reassert themselves as dominant in the world and all that type of stuff, so definitely want to be there, definitely want to be on the team," he said. “Hopefully things line up that way.”

While many players have limited their talk of the Olympics, Kevin Durant isn't one of them. “I will play in the Olympics next year,” Durant said during media day with the Phoenix Suns.

In October, LeBron James also commented on his potential spot on the Olympic team.

“I’ve got a lot of interest in playing in Paris with Team USA, I have a history of playing with Team USA,” he said, per ESPN. “We have a lot of great players here in America.”

James was a member of Team USA for the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Olympics. If he plays this summer, he will hold the record for oldest U.S. Olympic men’s basketball player at the age of 39. The record is currently held by Larry Bird, who played in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics at 35, according to NBC Sports.

In a win for the U.S., Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid, a Cameroon native who is also a citizen in France and America, has stated that he'd like to play for Team USA after being in communication with the French national team.

Embiid said in October that it was a “tough” decision for him to choose which country he would represent.

"I love all three options, you know, with my home country, which I love a lot," Embiid said, per ESPN. "But I really want to participate in the Olympics, that's been my goal and my dream. And you add that with the fact that my son is American, and I've been here for such a long time. ... I'm really thankful for the opportunity. France — the commitment they were willing to make — I really appreciate it. It was a tough decision."
